Initial ideas (Sam Jahan-Ahmed)

3rd October - Monday lesson's discussion
As mentioned in prior blog posts we finalised our song choice; our final choice ended up being Frances - Borrowed Time.

Costume
The costume we already had a preconceived idea on  based on the genre. Indie pop presents a very trendy, aesthetically pleasing image in regards to costume. We wanted outfits that would blend well with the locations to provide aesthetic but also appeal to the contemporary fashion choices of those that listen to indie pop, in order to reflect audience taste. We wanted three or more different costumes to match the setting visually and to show a direct contrast between performance and narrative.

Props

Locations
We wanted a variety of locations in order to reflect different settings and movement, to abstractly present the concept of "borrowed time". With this is mind, we also wanted locations that would match up to the aesthetics of the genre and more specifically, costume. Places like camden lock, kings cross, Brick lane and Shoreditch are notorious for their slightly "hipster" image. We wanted to incorporate trendy, more contemporary places with art and music at its very core and so these locations are places we are leaning towards thus far.

Shot types and camera movement
We want a variety of shot types, mainly wide shots and long shots to focus on performance, costume and setting/location. These are vital in reflecting and even promoting the image of our artists and so we want to incorporate a lot of those into the video. We also want big close ups and close ups to enhance emotion playing into the indie aspects of the music, the idea that this performer is genuine and writes and plays themselves, as aforementioned. Looking into the camera directly is something we want the video to consist of to interact with the audience, breaking the fourth wall as Andrew Goodwin put. We could have over the shoulder shots to reflect movement and perspective which ambiguously links to the lyrics.
We want movement in the camera to match the tempo and rhythm of the song and to provide an interactive feel to the video, relating yet again to Andrew Goodwin's theory.

Structure of video
We chose to do an amplification structure, encapsulating this idea of movement in time and as the song says "borrowed time. We didn't want a literal break up video as we felt it was generic and impractical and the genre didn't really match the concept. We wanted a balance of narrative and performance, the performance to promote the songwriter aspect of our artist and the narrative to provide an aesthetic.
